Android on the Palm Pre… Possible? Maybe after a Jailbreak

Palm Pre Blog - Wed, 01/28/2009 - 02:39

Can you really install Android on the Pre? Hackers say so...

We don’t know why you would want Android on your Pre considering how fantastic WebOS looks, but there are various people claiming that after a jailbreak (meaning, after hacking) the Pre you could possibly install Andriod and/or dual boot with WebOS. This is pretty cool, but I’ll probably just stick with WebOS… It looks rather yummy.

The crazy people are even claiming you could run Android inside WebOS much like you can run Windows inside a Mac, which would be interesting to say the least.

You can get more information here, if you’re really that interested.

Sprint Employees Already in Training for the Pre?

Palm Pre Blog - Wed, 01/28/2009 - 02:18

Sprint Are The Exclusive US Carrier Of The Palm Pre

A recent post on tech site Electronista claims Sprint employees have already started advanced training on the usage and techniques to sell the new Palm Pre. This is mainly thought to be rumor but is being supported by Twitter posts from a Yahoo employee who recently interviewed Palm investor Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners. The report states that some Sprint employees, who wanted to remain anonymous, are claiming that the Pre will not arrive in stores until June 2009 - which we predicted anyway.

The report goes on to mention the Pre’s main competitor, the Apple iPhone, and notes its refresh history. The phone launched in June 2007 and updated to 3G July 2008.

The opportunity for Palm and Sprint to aggressively promote the Pre before Apple releases their 3rd generation iPhone may prove to be brief; the Pre’s much anticipated release date could be encumbered by the on going war of legal words between Apple and Palm, which has not picked up much steam yet.

New Location Aware Palm Pre Features Revealed

Palm Pre Blog - Tue, 01/20/2009 - 23:48

Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners, who invested 20 percent of his private equity fund in Palm, has revealed some pretty cool new location aware features that come as standard with the Pre.

The first thing he mentioned is that it “does stuff for you,” which in this case he used the calendar as an example; McNamee said that when you wake up in the morning, it will have already had a look at your calendar and downloaded things such as maps and Wikipedia entries for the people, places and organisations you are going to visit for the whole day, all in advance without you having to do anything other than turn the setting on. Wow, pretty cool, right?

It gets better!

It knows when you are going to be late. No, seriously. Using the Pre’s GPS, Clock and Calendar functionality, the device will check the calendar to see where you are supposed to be and at what time - it will then check where you actually are (i.e, 5 miles away from where you are supposed to be) and then warn you that you are going to be late, calculate roughly how late you are going to be, and email all of the involved parties to let them know you’ll be however minutes late. Awesomeness.

You can check the full video above.

Vodafone To Carry GSM Palm Pre In The UK - Confirmed/Exclusive?

Palm Pre Blog - Sun, 01/18/2009 - 21:47

As we reported earlier this week, we now have it almost 100% that Vodafone will be carrying the Palm Pre in the UK. After several days of contacting Vodafone and receiving stock “We are not aware of any plans to range this device in the UK.” emails, I finally got through to someone who acknowledged the carriers plans to, well, carry the device. The short email I received back:

Hi Ryan,

With regrets, I can not currently share any information regarding the Palm Pre handset; we are still in early negotiation with Palm, but nothing is solid. I can double check next week but as of this point in time that is all I know.

Aditionally, as one of our readers pointed out, an administrator on the Vodafone UK forum also hinted at the possibility of the device coming to the network:

Hey thatfenderstratguy,

That phone does look awesome, we were taking a look at this in the office the other day a few of us have our eye on it, I would keep your eyes peeled on the coming soon section here at our online shop.

Thanks

Matt

We’ll keep you updated as and when we hear more.

Best Buy To Exclusively Carry Palm Pre For 2 Months?

Palm Pre Blog - Fri, 01/16/2009 - 03:42

Best Buy Launching The Palm Pre?

According to WebOSArena, retail giant Best Buy will be the exclusive carrier of the Palm Pre for up to two months - at the moment, this is purely rumor, with WebOS Arena adding that a “credible source” revealed this to them.

However, the partnership does make some sense as this would not be the first time Sprint launched something exclusivley with Best Buy; they launched the Samsung Instinct in this way last summer.

In other news, PCMag have stated that Analysts believe the Pre will cost somewhere in the $199 to $249 range with contract; this sounds realistic to us, though again it is purely speculation.

Vodafone To Carry GSM Palm Pre In The UK/EU?

Palm Pre Blog - Wed, 01/14/2009 - 04:17

Vodafone To Carry The Palm Pre?Hmm, this is an interesting one… Last night, BGR were sent some screenshots from what would appear to be the WebOS SDK (Software Development Kit) and I noticed that one of the screenshots, pictured below, features a line of code stating “UseVodaphoneVoicemail” - could this mean that Vodafone will be the official Palm Pre operator in the UK and other EU countries?

Palm WebOS SDK - "Vodaphone"

What is rather suspicious about this is that in the code, they have spelt it Vodaphone instead of Vodafone; is this whole SDK thing faked, or is it a genuine error?

Analyst: Pre Will Break 1.5 Million Sales In First Year

Palm Pre Blog - Wed, 01/14/2009 - 02:41

Citi, a major financial services company based in New York City, have just issued a note on the Palm Pre regarding their estimates on first year sales. They seem very confident in the product, boasting they believe Palm will sell 1.5 million Pre’s within the first 12 months of the device being available.

It is also worth noting that this estimate only covers the Pre in the US; sales worldwide could be much higher.

What do you think? Can Palm really push 1.5 million Pre’s in devices first year?

The Palm Pre Wireless Charger - Meet The Touchstone

Palm Pre Blog - Mon, 01/12/2009 - 04:54

It was only justifiable for a phenomenal product to launch with a revolutionary must-have accessory.

The Touchstone Wireless Charger

Pre fans, meet the Touchstone – A wireless charger for Palm’s killer Smartphone.

Wireless Electricity

Wireless energy transfer is the process whereby electrical energy is transmitted from a power source to an electrical load, without any connecting wires in an electrical grid. This is ideal in cases where a continuous charge is needed, but interconnecting wires are inconvenient or just plain ugly.

The Touchstone

The Touchstone is similar to a dock, which once plugged in to a wall socket, will wirelessly charge the users Pre without any interconnecting wires. You simply place a Pre on the Touchstone, and the strong magnets automatically align the Pre in to the correct position for charging.

This is really smart stuff – If you receive a call while charging, you simply pick the Pre up and the call will begin. You can also use all of the phones functions while it’s charging, and best of all, you have no additional wires cluttering up your desk!

The Touchstone should be available alongside the Pre’s May-June launch date.

Say Hello To The Palm Pre - Features, Specs Verdict

Palm Pre Blog - Sat, 01/10/2009 - 08:01

Palm Pre - Official Press Image

Palm Newness

The Palm Pre is the newest and most innovative gadget to hit the world of smart phones; and as soon as it hits store shelves it is destined to become the most desirable phone on the market. But what is it about the Palm Pre that has cell phone users buzzing already? And why is the competition already worried, despite the fact that no price or official release date has even been set? In our first post we’ll answer those questions and more with our in-depth preview of the brand new Palm Pre smart phone.

WebOS

For starters, the Palm Pre features a brand new, proprietary operating system that is based off Linux. This provides a sleek GUI (graphical user interface) that is easy to navigate yet at the same time provides all of the features that you have come to expect from smart phone technology – including a highly capable and user-friendly web browser. You can take high quality photos with the 3 megapixel camera with LED flash, and the phone features easy to use cut and paste routines along with a variety of other editing options, as well. There are even several options when it comes to re-charging your Palm Pre, too. You can use the wireless Touchstone accessory or the MicroUSB plug; and you can even replace your battery if you would rather do it that way.

App Happy

To compliment all of the great features that are already installed on your Palm Pre, Palm has also announced an app store for the near future. Here you’ll be able to browse and install only the applications that you want; this will allow you to save memory (although the Palm Pre is equipped with a full 8 GB of internal storage) and you’ll also avoid cluttering up your Palm Pre with apps that you never use. Furthermore, Palm will also be releasing a software development kit, which will allow nearly any web designer to create their very own applications for the Palm Pre. Keeping this in mind, you will be able to access and use nearly any kind of software or application right from your Palm Pre. Palm has even hinted around to the future possibility of running 3D games on the Palm Pre, though this feature is not included in version 1.0 of their operating system.

Touch Me

The 3.1” touch screen on the Palm Pre features 24-bit color in a 480 x 320 display, and it is very responsive, accurate, and seems to be quite stable as well. The keyboard provides keys that are large enough and spaced out far enough apart to accommodate larger fingers, but this phone is in no way bulky. In fact, it is extremely lightweight and sleek, especially when compared to some of the other smart phone models that are currently on the market today. And weighing in at less than 5 ounces, you’ll hardly even notice that you are carrying the brand new Palm Pre in your pocket – that is, until it rings of course.
